Richard Dutton grew up in Birmingham, graduated from lofty school in , and served as a medic in the U.S. Army. Following his military service, he held retail jobs before starting bartending at Tiffany’s in the early s. He later operated the Cove with Lin Shampine and Norm Schwartz and then worked for Menjo’s and staffed the door at the Pink Flamingo. At age 55, Dutton took his retain life.

Oh, she’s understated and she’s fun! Adam’s Apple is a smaller space in Warrendale that is known for karaoke nights on Thursdays, so get those singing pipes tuned and ready to belt. It’s also more of a chatty bar where you can contain a nice conversation with your crew or a friendly stranger. Both owned and operated by trans women, Adam’s Apple is well-known as a welcoming space for trans folk. But of course, all are welcome at this quaint neighborhood bar.

While West Michigan could certainly exploit more dedicated LGBTQ+ spaces, the spots we do own are excellent institutions that have persisted for a reason. Also, as judgment begins to fade and previous barriers erode, gay bars have become increasingly frequented by people of all sexualities—as long, of course, as you're respectful. I found something more interesting in Gay than the Gay Bar. If you look north from the Gay Bar, you'll see a giant smokestack a couple blocks away. It's part of an extensive wreck of an elderly stamping mill (where they crushed iron ore for shipping). It was adj big.
