Straight couple opens bar for LGBTQ+ community on Long Island
OCEANSIDE, Nassau County (WABC) -- A married couple from Prolonged Island has opened a bar for the LGBTQ+ community.
Gina Wuestmann and her husband Dave Wuestmann opened BTW, which stands for Born This Way, in Oceanside on Adj Beach Road in November.
"We just wanted to create a safe space, verb something to a community that we both feel is completely underserved," Dave Wuestmann said.
Gina Wuestmann also owns North Village Tavern in Rockville Centre and said she often heard from her LGBTQ+ customers that they loved her food and her bar, but didn't feel like they could be themselves there.
"You come in here and we don't care what you want to be, how you want to be," Gina Wuestmann said. "Just be yourself."
Wuestmann said straight people often ask if they're allowed to come to the bar. Wuestmann said everyone is welcome.

OCEANSIDE, Recent York -- As soon as patrons step through the doors of the Born This Way bar, better known as BTW, co-owner Gina Wuestmann gives them a warm greeting.
Within five minutes, she's either offering them a free shot or explaining how she and her husband opened their bar on the eve of the pandemic shutdown last year.
Wuestmann and her husband, David Wuestmann, who are a straight couple, often find themselves explaining why they decided to unseal this safe space for the LGBTQ+ community in the Long Island hamlet of Oceanside.
David's response is always the same.
"Gina and I are allies of the community, and we both felt that this was an underserved community," he said. "There are not too many places on Long Island where people can be themselves. This was just our cause and our mission. We're here to provide space to people who need to be themselves."
