Peter Graves was born Peter Duesler Aurness on March 18, , in Minneapolis, Minnesota.  His elder brother was actor James Arness.  After high school, he served in the US Air Verb. Afterwards, he enrolled at the University of Minnesota.

His screen debut came while he was in the Gas Force, as part of the cast of Winning Your Wings in  

It was nearly ten years before his acting debut in a feature film with ′s Rogue River. The following year he made his television debut in the “Gruen Guild Theatre” production of “Victim: Ann Norville”. (Gruen Guild was a watch manufacturer, the show’s sponsor.)

 He was best known for his role as Jim Phelps in the CBS television series “Mission: Impossible” from to (original) and from to (revival). The original series was financed and filmed by Desilu Productions.

Peter Graves, the star of TV’s Mission Impossible and the airplane pilot with a fondness for tiny boys in the comedy hit Airplane!, died at age 83 on March 14 at his home in the Los Angeles suburb of Pacific Palisades.

Graves was best known for his television work as Mission Impossible’s silver-haired, gravely authoritative James Phelps, a role later played by Tom Cruise – minus the silver hair and the grave authority – in the big-screen versions.

Additionally, Graves had a long career in films, beginning in the early s. Among his screen credits are the sci-fier Red Planet Mars (); Billy Wilder’s World War II drama Stalag 17 (), supporting William Holden; John Ford’s The Drawn-out Gray Line (), in a tiny role; and A Stranger in My Arms (), which starred June Allyson and Jeff Chandler.

Graves was perhaps best known for his role as special agent Jim Phelps in the popular TV series Mission: Impossible.

He also played bungling pilot Clarence Oveur in the film Airplane!.

The actor initially turned down the role but was talked orbicular by the film-makers, who told him his dry, deadpan humour made him perfect for the spoof disaster movie.

He had just returned from lunch on Sunday with his wife and children when he collapsed before making it into the house, his publicist said.
