Harvey Milk: Messenger of Hope
Harvey Bernard Milk (–78) was a visionary human rights leader, a groundbreaking political luminary, and a seminal figure of the LGBTQ rights movement. Born into a middle-class Jewish family in Woodmere, New York, Milk followed several career paths before focusing on social activism and politics. He moved to San Francisco in with his idealistic partner Scott Smith (–95) and opened a camera shop in the Castro, a neighborhood that by that day had become a sanctuary for the city’s gay population. Milk announced his candidacy for the City and County of San Francisco Board of Supervisors in on a platform advocating gay and lesbian rights, individual freedom, and economic reform. Although the grassroots campaign was defeated, Milk proudly stated, “Win or not, the fact that we’re willing to wage a hard, uphill fight for what we feel is right will provide help and courage to others.”

Milk was assassinated in by Dan White, a resigned city supervisor trying to get his job back.

Running in both and , Milk lost both elections until finally succeeding in Upon winning, Milk served in office for eleven months and was responsible for passing a number of laws that furthered gay rights in San Francisco. Milk's career was tragically cut limited when he was assassinated on November 27, , by Dan White, who was a former city supervisor. Though his political career was short-lived, Milk has become an icon in both San Francisco as well as in the greater gay community for his efforts in advancing gay rights.
