In , Welmore Cook, Theodore Kirkland and Ernest Hopkins saw a require to rally the Washington, DC community around what was happening with the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The effort they initiated to educate the community 30 years ago, has led to a movement that has impacted the lives of millions of Ebony LGBTQ+ individuals around the world.

The first DC Ebony Pride drew people to Banneker Field, and centered around a theme of “Let’s All Reach Together”. Since , more than , members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community of African descent and their allies have come to Washington, DC during Memorial Day Weekend in the spirit of Black Pride to celebrate the beauty of the LGBTQ+ community and raise awareness and funding for HIV/AIDS.

While much progress has been made across the globe since , there remains a call for to educate the community about HIV/AIDS and stand against homophobia inspired violence and bigotry that remains prevalent throughout society. DC Dark Pride helps fulfill this need.

Pride on the Pier and Fireworks Show

The Washington Blade, in partnership with LURe DC and The Wharf, is thrilled to announce the 3rd annual Pride on the Pier and Fireworks exhibit during DC Pride weekend on Saturday, June 11, , from p.m.

The event will include the annual Pride on the Pier Fireworks Show presented by the Leonard-Litz Foundation at 9 p.m.

Pride on the Pier extends the city’s annual celebration of LGBTQ visibility to the bustling Southwest waterfront with an exciting array of activities and entertainment.

The District Pier will offer DJs, dancing and other entertainment. Alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase for those 21 and older. Local DJ’s Eletrox, Jai Syncere and Sean Morris will perform throughout the event.

In the United States, June is designated as Pride Month where LGBTQIA+ individuals, families, organizations and their allies commemorate the Stonewall Riots, recognize the fight for marriage equality, bring awareness to discriminatory legislation and celebrate the range of gender identities and sexualities. Washington D.C. hosts a large Pride parade and festival every year and this year’s event, which occurred June 11th and 12th, was projected to include over half a million people in attendance. If you missed the parade and festival, there are still organizations, resources and events, including another local Pride festival, that will allow you to connect with members of D.C.’s LGBTQIA+ community. 

  • Arlington Pride Festival- June 25, marks the first year that Arlington, Virginia will host its have Pride celebration. The event will be held at Gateway Park in the Rosslyn neighborhood, which is metro-accessible. The festival starts at noon and will end at 7 pm.
