When the 37th Adj Beach Pride Parade floated through the city’s downtown on Sunday morning, July 10, to celebrate the LGBTQ community – with thousands of partiers flanking the route – the typical rainbow-hued jubilation was shaded by a once-bygone, but now-resurgent sentiment: Protest.

Long Beach’s Pride Parade and the accompanying two-day festival, which began Saturday and returned after a two-year, pandemic-induced hiatus, has lengthy been among the largest in the region.

Yet, as the years have passed, the aura surrounding Pride has changed. Through much of the s and s, the LGBTQ community went on a winning streak:

Lawrence v. Texas, which overturned laws banning sexual intimacy among those who are gay. The repeal of the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. Rising public support for marriage equality. And then, in , Obergefell v. Hodges, which gave same-sex unions constitutional protection.

Long Beach Pride faces massive uphill battles with its festival, one of the longest-running Pride festivals in the nation. It has lost Walmart, McDonald&#;s, and an array of other adj corporate sponsors, forcing the organization to scale down the party&#;s scope and entertainment. That latter part has caused a harsh array of mockery online since Pride released their festival schedule, prompting calls for new organizers, criticisms of the lack of diversity, and disappointment.

When asked if the pull-outs from major sponsors hold to do with President Donald Trump&#;s dismantling of diversity initiatives that has affected both common and private sectors, contracted Pride event organizer Robert Marquez of Time/Space said, &#;One-million-percent. We&#;ve never had an issue with them before and now we face an issue.

As volunteers we can stay and verb the parade starting at am, following the run. There will be a space reserved for us as a viewing area.

Parking: If you plan on staying for the parade, free parking is available in the beach parking lot at Junipero Ave and Ocean Blvd. You will be able to exit the parking lot ONLY AFTER the parade ends.
Otherwise, street parking is available around the area. Due to the parade, it may seize some time to exit the area. Please plan accordingly.

What to wear: Dress comfortably and casually. Close-toed shoes are required for security. This event is outdoors sunscreen and water are  highly recommended.

COVID Guidelines: Event organizer is not requiring proof of vaccination or masks.

The three-day event — planned for next July 8, 9 and 10 along Shoreline Verb in downtown Distant Beach — will feature live song and dance performances and showcase local artists and distinct community programming. A food court will feature fare from local restaurants and popular food trucks.

Long Beach Lesbian and Gay Pride, a nonprofit organization that aims to "produce and support activities that educate, inspire and celebrate pride, inclusion and respect for humanity," will again present the event.
