Adams Street Bar (Akron, Ohio)
Adams Street Bar, now closed, was located at 77 N. Adams Street in Akron, Ohio. The location had a rich history and was Akron&#;s longest running bar in the LGBTQ+ community when it closed in The venue got its start in the late &#;s when Helen Jenkins opened it as the Robin&#;s Nest, a lesbian bar. In she re-branded Robin&#;s Nest as the Hayloft, a gay man&#;s bar. Don Brown took over ownership on June 5th, and shortly after renamed the bar Adams Street Bar.

The Lincoln Bar, located first at 13 S. Howard Street and later at 28 S. Howard Street, became Akron’s first gay bar of note and it remained mostly unrivaled until the 60s where its popularity began to fall off as competition arose. The bar, which attracted both Black and white clients, opened in under the ownership of Charles Nakos and Molly Illitch, and Nakos remained the bar’s primary director until his death in July of Nakos was in the process of stepping out of his car on E. Market Street when he was struck by a semi-truck trailer after the truck’s steering gear failed.
Following Charles’s death, his wife, Carolyn Nakos, took over and held ownership until her control death 3 years later in The bar was then bought by Anthony F. Granata, who owned the bar until it closed in and later opened The Akron Cafe at E. Market Street. While the bar’s ownership changed, the demographic of its audience did not.

A Nightclub Like No Other
The Interbelt is one of the oldest gay nightclubs in Akron with a compelling modern history. Original owner Vernon Baker bought the club in the late s, it has been unwrap for over thirty years. The club features different theme nights to provide entertainment to the local area, such as Hip Hop Mondays, Bad Girls Club on Thursdays, and Fuego Fridays. It has had many local talents and well-known drag queens who hold performed, such as Plastique Tiara, Brooke Lynn Hytes, Roxxxy Andrews, and Manila Luzon. Now, every year, there is a charity event between The University of Akron and Kent State University called Battle of the Wagon Heel, which benefits the larger community in different ways. The amount of currency raised from that night is split in half between Kent State’s LGBTQ+ emergency fund and Canapi in Akron.

In the northeastern corner of Ohio, Akron is a well-planned city spreading out over several hills. Although it’s just 40 miles south of Cleveland, Akron has its have vibrant gay scene centered around Highland Square. Many who live in the suburban neighborhoods between the two cities opt to party here rather than driving to the larger city to the north. Students from the University of Akron and Kent State, and workers from the Goodyear plant rub elbows in the friendly bars and clubs, mingling easily in this well-planned city.
