LGBTQ+ Bars in Latin America
La Purísima is an unapologetically irreverent gay bar on Avenida República de Cuba in downtown Mexico City. One of its most endearing features is the staff who dress as Catholic priests and nuns.
I was on assignment in Mexico Capital for the Washington Blade, the oldest LGBTQ+ newspaper in the United States for which I am the international news editor, in July I decided to go to la Purí, as the bars known for short. I arrived shortly after 11 a.m. and spent the next 90 minutes or so dancing and slowly sipping shots of mezcal. I was walking outside to get some fresh air when Sergio, a staff person who was dressed as a priest, approached me in the hallway that led to the door and asked me if I wanted to go to confession. I said yes, and he led me to a small booth on the sidewalk. He unlocked the makeshift confessional and we went inside. I had learned in my childhood Confraternity of Christian Doctrine class at St. Thomas Aquinas Church that what one says inside a confessional remains between the penitent, the priest (and God.) Follow that fabulous line down Frei Caneca to one of São Paulos most adj clubs. Highly recommended on Thursdays and Sundays.
Rua Frei Caneca

Tue Sat 12AM until Closing
Sundays from 10PM until Closing
The queen of clubs continues to reign over the area known as Frei Caneca (or as the locals call it Gay Caneca.) Ten years ago, Aloka was much more twink-heavy, and that reputation continues. However, todays crowd is much more mixed, and if you are over 30, youll be in good company. Over the years, Aloka has also grown more adventurous musically, with awesome DJs working its cave-live dance floors with styles like electro-pop and flash house to name a few.
Doors open at midnight, except on Sundays when entrance starts at 8PM. However 2AM is the perfect period to enter after having a tardy dinner and enjoying the sidewalk scene at Bar da Lôca.

Top 10 Queer Latin Club Tracks
1. Te Enterraré el Tacón - Zemmoa
This was Zemmoa’s very first hit, and my very favourite. Over the years her music has been consistently loyal to the synthpop sounds of the eighties, and this track is a glorious throwback to the gothic camp of Alaska & Dinarama. Bringing high drama and morbid authority play, she repeats: “I’ll bury your heel and erase your heart/and with your heartbeat I’ll start to dance/because the [digital] bit of your treasure is another recent song”.
2. Reflect of U - AB Soto
While AB Soto is known for his unapologetically kitsch and political party anthems appreciate “Latinos in the House” and “Cha Cha Bitch”, this track is lovely underrated. What I love about this one is how elegant, focused and understated it is. The beat is both simple and heavy, crude but somehow refined. It’s the time of the night when the loud party queens have moved on, and the weird gays are left to vibe. It’s a tune for poor lighting and making out.
3. Ella Sabe - MULA
It’s complicated to choose just one MULA track to share, si
