Does it matter that Footballers don't want to arrive out, perhaps because of fear of abuse from the terraces, or abuse within the changing room, or possibly loss of sponsorship? Maybe it doesn't, it's a personal choice and in a highly adj, emotionally charged, general role where 95% of the fans are against you at the finest of times perhaps it's wise to stay quiet. And it's not as though other minorities are not also unrepresented. There are no Indian Premier League players either. Although gay footballers are presumably there, knowing that by coming out they could be a role model to tens of thousands of young gay teens. But they still choose not to do so, for reasons.
Across the world, when the home of football (Brazil) can elect a homophobe as president, the world wonders how. Most of his supporters won't agree with his views, but who will be upright up for the LGBT community if the g
Football is the most popular sport in the world. But strangely there has been very limited footballers that own come out as gay.
Homosexuality in English and world football is still a taboo subject and one that is shared by both players and the media. In all of the professional leagues in England ( 5 divisions ) there are zero openly gay footballers. That is a very depressed statistic when you consider that roughly 1 in 10 males are gay in the UK.

Generally speaking, people in Sweden take pride in being liberal and open-minded - that goes for the media too. And I think homosexuality is not the elephant in the room anymore, you can joke about it without fearing that you will be labelled a homophobe (as drawn-out as you dont actually mean to offend someone, of course). The terraces, of course, are lagging behind there, and there are probably a larger proportion of genuine homophobes there than elsewhere, but my impression is that these voices are drowned out and their influence on society in general is very limited. But Im not gay so its only an outsiders perspective. As for footballers and homosexuality, I dont think Hysén is the best example (sadly, its the only we got!), because he is not primarily notable for being a football player. He won Strictly Appear Dancing after he came out and is now a celebrity because of that. It might be different for someon |
